Lithuanian Experience Showcased at UN Forum on Sustainable Cities
On Tuesday, Lithuania’s Minister of Environment, Simonas Gentvilas, highlighted Lithuania's achievements in sustainable urban planning at the World Urban Forum, organized by the United Nations (UN) Habitat Programme in Cairo, Egypt.
“Lithuania's Master Plan serves as the central framework for sustainable urban development, harmonizing national, regional, and local priorities,” said Minister Gentvilas. “With this plan, we prioritize affordable housing, climate resilience, and energy efficiency—key elements in planning for the future of sustainable cities.”
According to the Minister, strategic planning has resulted in a 40% improvement in energy efficiency and nearly a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from renovated buildings.
“Around 80% of Lithuanian municipalities are engaged in various sustainable housing programs, reducing emissions and contributing to a greener future. Local communities actively participate in these initiatives,” Gentvilas added.
He also discussed the National Energy and Climate Action Plan, emphasizing substantial public and private investments.
“Between 2021 and 2030, we aim to invest approximately €31 billion to achieve our environmental goals, with €2 billion dedicated specifically to climate adaptation. We are continuously exploring innovative ways to make our cities more sustainable. We’ve mandated that at least 50% of materials used in public building construction be environmentally friendly, and we are finalizing a life cycle assessment methodology to evaluate buildings' impacts on the environment, climate change, human health, and reuse potential,” Gentvilas stated.
The World Urban Forum, launched by the UN in 2001, addresses critical challenges of rapid urbanization and its effects on communities, cities, economies, climate change, and governance.
Organized by UN Habitat, the Forum provides a high-level, open, and inclusive platform to tackle the challenges of sustainable urbanization globally.
