Major Climate Change Issues Addressed at COP29 in Azerbaijan
The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) opened on Monday in Baku, Azerbaijan, to advance the Paris Agreement's action plan and review progress made since COP28 in Dubai last year. Delegates are set to negotiate key aspects of climate policy, including the first global stocktake of climate actions.
From November 18–22, Environment Minister Simonas Gentvilas will attend the second high-level session of the conference. He will participate in ministerial roundtables and events promoting clean energy initiatives and ambitious mitigation solutions. A Heads of State session was held earlier on November 12–13.
Lithuania, along with all EU Member States, is committed to ensuring that COP29 delivers ambitious and balanced outcomes. Key goals include maintaining the Paris Agreement's target to limit global warming to 1.5°C and enhancing global resilience to climate impacts. A major focus is on increasing mitigation ambitions globally, especially among emerging economies. Countries are expected to pledge stronger national commitments by 2030 and present long-term strategies for achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
Another significant agenda item is the establishment of a new post-2025 long-term global climate finance target, building on the current annual $100 billion target. The EU has reaffirmed its commitment to this goal, including $100 million in climate finance for developing nations. Discussions will also address developing indicators to measure the effectiveness of climate adaptation measures and finalizing rules for mechanisms underpinning the international carbon market.
Lithuania plans to join several climate initiatives during COP29, working closely with EU partners. Notable initiatives include:
- The Global Energy Storage Initiative: Aiming to increase global energy storage capacity sixfold compared to 2022 levels.
- The Declaration on Water Protection: Promoting effective and sustainable water resource management to combat climate change and preserve clean water for future generations.
- Coal Phase-Out Initiative: Committing to avoid the construction of new coal-fired power plants and expand renewable energy use.
COP29 features a diverse array of events fostering climate cooperation across sectors. The Green Zone, adjacent to the main conference venue, hosts public debates, exhibitions, and interactive sessions with scientists, environmentalists, policymakers, and the general public. This space highlights innovative solutions and amplifies voices advocating for urgent climate action.
