Decommissioning of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (2025)

Developer of the project is the State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. The project – Decommissioning of the Ignalina NPP – was started with the preparatory planning in 2001 and is planned to be completed by the end of 2038 with demolition of relevant engineering structures on the Ignalina NPP site and remediation of the site. The project covers dismantling and decommissioning of equipment including dismantling of reactors.

Two countries – the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Latvia – are relatively close to the location of the proposed economic activity. The state border of Lithuania and Belarus is located about 5 km to the east of the INPP power units, and the state border of Lithuania and Latvia is located about 8 km to the north of the INPP power units. It is not expected that the project will make a significant effect even within the territory of Lithuania, however making the most careful consideration based on the precautionary principle and taking into account the preliminary survey of the opinions of countries, transboundary EIA will be carried out and not only neighbouring countries but also the countries of the Baltic Sea region are notified or informed about the project.

The decision regarding the environmental impact of the proposed economic activity will be made by the competent authority – Environmental Protection Agency, taking into account potential environmental impacts, proposals of the public concerned, the results of consultations with national entities of environmental impact assessment (other state institutions and executive institutions of relevant municipalities), and the results of transboundary consultations.
