Sustainable development
Sustainable development is the path towards a modern and responsible state and society. It is based on three equally important policy areas: environmental protection, economic development and social well-being.
The foundations of the global sustainable development framework were laid in 1992, when the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development established its key principles. Subsequent international agreements, including the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation and the outcome document of the Rio+20 Conference, reaffirmed countries’ commitment to building a more sustainable world.
Population growth, the depletion of natural resources, increasing pollution and other environmental, economic and social challenges extend beyond national borders. These developments require countries to continue strengthening the practical implementation of sustainable development principles and to pursue more responsible long-term development.
