Mission, Vison and Values

The Ministry of Environment works to ensure a high-quality environment for the people of Lithuania and to safeguard the country’s natural resources, biodiversity and landscape for future generations.

The Ministry’s mission is to create a sustainable relationship between people and nature. In shaping and implementing environmental policy, the Ministry seeks to ensure that natural resources are used responsibly, ecosystems are protected, and environmental considerations are integrated into territorial planning, construction, housing and other areas of public policy.

The Ministry’s vision is a sustainable environment for the people of Lithuania and future generations.

The Ministry’s core value is commitment to nature. Since nature has no voice in policy-making, the Ministry seeks to represent environmental interests in decision-making and public administration. This commitment is reflected in the responsible use of resources, the protection of natural assets, support for environmental initiatives and consistent implementation of the Ministry’s mission.

The Ministry’s work is guided by professionalism, cooperation, consistency, transparency and creativity. These principles mean decisions based on expertise, cooperation with institutions and society, continuity in implementing long-term objectives, openness about activities and results, and support for innovative solutions.

The Ministry’s strategic objectives are to:

  • ensure an adequate quality of the environment for the people of Lithuania and preserve biodiversity and landscape identity;
  • ensure the rational use, restoration and enhancement of natural resources;
  • ensure state regulation of territorial planning, construction, housing development, and the use and maintenance of buildings in line with the principles of sustainable development;
  • increase the efficiency of governance.
