Explore the Rejuvenated Lithuanian Zoo

The 85-year-old Lithuanian Zoo reopened its gates on November 13th after an extensive two-year renovation. Throughout the festive week (November 13-18), visitors will not only enjoy the newly renovated space and recently acquired animals but also partake in a range of exclusive activities. These include film screenings, book presentations, educational sessions, theater classes, a concert, and various other family-friendly events catering to both young and old.

Established in 1938 by notable figures of its time - T. Ivanauskas, A. Merkis, S. Putvinskis, I. Končius, and A. Juška - the Lithuanian Zoo proudly celebrates its 85th anniversary with a revitalized, modernized, and improved facility. The reconstruction effort, covering approximately 80% of the zoo, has markedly enhanced the living conditions for the animals. Seven new buildings have been erected, old ones renovated, aviaries refurbished, new visitor and staff spaces created, pathways landscaped, children's playgrounds added, an exotarium with an educational center established, and a viewing tower with a lift constructed on the premises.

At present, the zoo boasts 149 animal species, with over 50 falling under protected status. Following the reconstruction, the number of protected species is expected to rise in the next five years, contributing significantly to the conservation of habitats and animal species not only within Lithuania but also globally. During the opening celebration, visitors will have the opportunity to encounter new arrivals and reunite with old favorites after a two-year hiatus.
