Algirdas Pieniuta takes office as Vice-Minister of Environment

As of today, Algirdas Pieniuta has taken up his duties as Vice-Minister of Environment. He will be responsible for forest policy.

According to Mr Pieniuta, forests are among the country’s most valuable assets, and Lithuania therefore needs to reach a long-term agreement on the future of the forest sector and clearly define how its forests will be protected, managed and used.

“I am a forester by profession, but caring for forests is more than just a job to me. My father, grandfather and great-grandfather all worked as foresters, so I feel a strong personal and moral responsibility towards this sector. There is much to be done and expectations are high, which means we will need to focus on clear priorities. It is important to ensure decent working conditions for people employed in the sector, make the best possible use of the available scientific expertise, and safeguard the public interest in decision-making,” says Mr Pieniuta.

Before his appointment, Mr Pieniuta served as an adviser to the Minister of Transport and Communications. Prior to that, he spent more than a decade working in the railway transport sector, where he gained experience in management, strategic planning, environmental matters and infrastructure maintenance.

Mr Pieniuta holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in forestry from the Agriculture Academy of Vytautas Magnus University. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in Lithuanian local history.
