Lithuanian and Latvian experts discuss Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant closure works
The potential environmental impact of the closure of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) and the construction of associated radioactive waste management facilities is also of interest to Latvian authorities and the public.
During cross-border consultations organized by the Ministry of the Environment on Wednesday, discussions were held regarding the planned project for the reconstruction of the bituminous radioactive waste repository and its conversion into a disposal facility. The repository is situated approximately 8 km from the Lithuanian-Latvian border, implicating neighboring authorities and the public in the environmental impact assessment process.
The Espoo Convention, which outlines the requirements for transboundary environmental impact assessment procedures, mandates transboundary consultations. A representative from the Lithuanian Energy Institute presented the planned works to reconstruct the bituminous radioactive waste storage facility and convert it into a repository during the consultation. Latvian representatives expressed interest in safety issues, technology alternatives, monitoring, and subsequent actions related to the closure of the IAEA.
"This work is part of the project to close down the nuclear power plant. Its potential environmental impact is of particular interest to Latvia, as the IAE is only about 30 km from Daugavpils," explained Vitalijus Auglys, Head of the Pollution Prevention Policy Group at the Ministry of Environment.
Lithuania anticipates receiving written comments and suggestions from the Latvian public and institutions. These inputs will be considered when the Environmental Protection Agency makes a decision on the project following the completion of cross-border and national environmental impact assessment procedures.
