United Nations Forum on Forests focuses on global forest conservation and sustainable management
This week, representatives of the Forest Policy Group at the Ministry of Environment are attending the twenty-first session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF21) in New York. Delegations of Member States, international organisations, research institutions, non-governmental organisations and the private sector are discussing global forest conservation, sustainable forest management and financing.
The session focuses primarily on measures that would support more consistent implementation of international commitments on forest conservation and sustainable management. One of its main objectives is to reach agreement on a comprehensive omnibus resolution. The draft resolution addresses the Global Forest Goals, including halting forest loss, expanding the area of protected and sustainably managed forests, and strengthening sustainable forest management. Discussions will also cover strengthening the capacity of the UN Forum on Forests Secretariat and preparations for the review of the effectiveness of the international arrangement on forests.
The Global Forest Goals Report 2026, presented during the Forum, assesses progress in implementing the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests 2017–2030. The report is based on countries’ voluntary national reports and the latest global forest data. It stresses that, as 2030 approaches, action must be accelerated to halt forest loss and strengthen forest restoration, financing and monitoring.
UNFF21 discussions also address the role of forests in implementing international agreements on climate change, biodiversity and land degradation, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals. A message to the COP30 climate conference is also being prepared.
“Forests are among the most important ecosystems for achieving climate neutrality and protecting biodiversity. It is important for Lithuania to participate actively in international discussions on the implementation of the Global Forest Goals and to contribute to decisions that strengthen sustainable forest management in Europe and worldwide,” said Aurimas Saladžius, Head of the Forest Policy Group at the Ministry of Environment.
At UNFF21, Lithuania is presenting its national progress in sustainable forest management, participating in negotiations on the forthcoming resolution and contributing to discussions on strengthening global forest financing and monitoring systems.
Lithuania’s engagement in the United Nations Forum on Forests is also particularly relevant as the country prepares for its Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2027. At next year’s Forum, Lithuania will coordinate and present the common position of the European Union.
